Invest in this world, invest in the kingdom

Today, Keith and I invest ourselves to honor a relationship. At the time this post goes live, we will be attending the out-of-town memorial service of a dear friend, retired pastor, and leader of our small group. We last met in the spring of 2023 to mark Phil and Judy’s 55th wedding anniversary. A few months later, Judy died after a short illness. Now Phil has joined her in eternity.

Death gives us an opportunity to examine our lives and in what we “invest.” What does the Bible say?

Invest generously

Ship your grain across the sea; after many days you may receive a return. Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. Ecclesiastes 11:1-2 NIV

Though Ecclesiastes offers much wisdom, this passage is puzzling. It could be referring to the important of diversifying investments (“invest in seven or eight ventures”) and taking risks to potentially increase returns, while also acknowledging the potential for losses. Practical advice about making good and broad use of resources. Or it could refer to charitable giving. Either way, good counsel: invest broadly and generously to take care of yourself and others.

Invest productively

In the New Testament, the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30 NIV) illustrates the “invest” concept of stewardship. Individuals are entrusted with resources, talents, with the expectation for us to use our talents—God-given gifts—wisely and productively to grow the kingdom, as Phil and Judy did. How they loved and encouraged their neighbors, everyone they met.

Invest responsibly

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 NIV

This verse ties the two previous together. Believers are encouraged to use their wealth responsibly—as opposed to hoarding. The message is that God’s provision is certain while wealth is not, and treasure is found in generosity, sharing, and good deeds.

Invest often refers to money, and indeed, we are encouraged to invest our funds generously, productively, and responsibly. But the second meaning of “invest” is also apropos: provide or endow someone or something with a particular quality or attribute. God invests in us, endowing us with qualities to share with others, to grow His kingdom, and to put our hope in Him.

Rest well, Judy and Phil, good and faithful servants. You invested well. We rejoice in your victory, and we miss you.

Carole, thank you for sharing these reflections. What a blessed testament that Phil and Judy shared with so many others. On a side bar, their patio and yard look so much like my mother’s in Montana.

Hi Richard, Phil and Judy were amazing people. The picture was taken in their backyard in Virginia’s Rockfish Valley. Funny how yards and people can look alike. Keith and I stopped to eat on the way home from the funeral, and a woman came over and said to Keith, “I’m sorry, but I’ve been staring at you because you look exactly like my brother.” And Keith’s reply, “No doubt a fine looking guy.” Ha!

I appreciate your thoughtful reflections, Carole, and the wisdom shared. Your statement that, “God invests in us, endowing us with qualities to share with others, to grow His kingdom, and to put our hope in Him” is an inspiring reminder. May we so live that His investment in us reaps a bountiful harvest for Him.

CD~ through their lives and times together, you can see and feel the impact this wonderful couple had on others. I’m sorry. And thank you both for the investments you make helping others. Funerals, loss, and grief, for me, is handled better only because of faith and the promise by Christ. Take care as you invest. God bless you!
