Soon and very soon, we are going to see

Five months ago, the New Life Choir at church sang Andraé Crouch’s song “Soon and Very Soon.” Lately, the tune and lyrics have been whirling in my head – you know how that happens?

Soon and very soon, we are going to see mountain laurel bloom

I’m singing to the mountain laurel: soon and very soon, we are going to see you blooming gloriously.

Kalmia latifolia is an evergreen shrub native to the eastern United States. The plant grows naturally in rocky slopes and mountainous forest areas, in poor soil like ours. Although there are cultivated varieties in shades of pink, red and maroon, native mountain laurels have hexagonal flowers that bloom light pink to white.

One drawback: all parts of the plant are poisonous, so we just look at them.

Soon and very soon, we are going to see our books in print

I’m singing to Keith and me, because both of us are going to see our books in print soon. Or maybe I’m singing to our publishers with the hope that we’ll be holding our advance review copies (ARC’s) very soon

The Starflower for Keith, Wisdom Builds Her House for me.

Soon and very soon, we are going to see the King

After photographing the mountain laurel, I walked the trail behind our house, clearing debris from the path, as I do periodically. I came to this downed tree, a tulip popular completely stripped of bark and riddled with woodpecker holes. Soon and very soon we all die, making room for another generation.

With Mac and Cato following along, I thought about how Heathcliff and Freya had run the mountain together not so long ago. And how Keith and I are going to see the King someday.

God willing, not very soon. We’d like to get that tree cut up and enjoy the warmth of a few more years of fires in our basement and main floor stoves.

Now I have the song in my head. Those flowers look very unusual! Congratulations on your books!! What an achievement – but I suspect it will all pale in significance when the King returns in all His splendour. #30

All too soon I’m gonna die,
    but baby, not just yet,
so leave the chips all where they lie
and go and place another bet
on the honour of a man
who aims to make his vows come true,
to hold fast unto the plan
of doing what he said he’d do
for his wife and for his land,
for the dogs, and yes, the cat,
and pray the Lord will understand
that I will turn down quick and flat
    any offer, though Divine
that takes me out before my time.
