Dear Mother and Daddy,
It is another cool, grey day with a promise of sun – typical late fall in Dallas.
Thank you so much for the 12 days of Christmas glasses. They are so pretty and will help us remember the lyrics. After 8 Maids ‘a Milking, I always get confused. We’ll probably use them after Nutcracker. Life is centered on that event for the next 3+ weeks. We do appreciate the dishes and glasses – a lovely, festive sign.
David was so cute the other day when we were on our way to the bike shop – his Christmas gift from me. He said that they were discussing parenting in school, and he said that spanking and yelling were very damaging to children. I said, “Well, I guess you’re damaged, David.” He said, “No, you’ve got to do it a lot.” Well, I said that it sometimes felt like I yelled a lot, but well, what should parents do? He said, “They say you should lecture your kids ‘til it wears them down.” I laughed and said that I got tired of lecturing sometimes – what could I do about that? David puzzled. I asked him if I could number my lectures and just call out the appropriate number. “Nope, it’s got to be a full-blown lecture.” I asked, “How ‘bout taping the lecture?” “No,” David said, “that wouldn’t work – unless you lip-synched.” I died laughing!
Hope you all are doing well. Got to get back to my job! Take care!
Love, Carole

Dear Mother,
Last week, David came to visit us at Vanaprastha. We saw David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries at Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton and visited a few of the local attractions in Nelson County: Wintergreen, breweries, wineries and restaurants. Mostly, we soaked up the beautiful landscape, looked at the stars and talked. I told him the story about getting his bike when he was 10. He laughed saying, “Yeah, I always did like to beat a dead horse.” “Well, maybe so,” I said, “but I wouldn’t trade my time with you for anything.”
We used the 12 days of Christmas glasses and dishes and thought of you. Here is a picture of Heathcliff and David. He’s in Dubai and headed to Mumbai, India. How times change!
Merry Christmas, Mother!
Love you much, Carole
