We might get rain later this week— the thirsting cucumbers, lettuce, Chard, kale, and tomato plants, plus the bean seeds underground and herbs in pots could sure use it, which in its spontaneity is far more effective compared to my routine hand watering. And so, I ask God politely, “Please, Lord, might we have some rain?”
In the Bible, “might” can mean permission or a request, or signify strength, power, and force, both physically and spiritually.
Might as permission or request
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 ESV Here in the Old Testament, we ask to avoid sin and internalize God’s word to avoid sinning against Him.
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV Paul’s letter captures the essence of the entire Biblical story: Jesus, though sinless, bore the penalty for humanity, so we might (permission/request) in Him become righteous. Substitutionary atonement.
Biblically, “might” more often refers to God’s omnipotence, the strength He gives to people, or the courage and fortitude needed for a life of faith. The Hebrew word “koach” translates as “might,” strength, power, or ability, especially in the Old Testament. The Greek word “ischus” (ἰσχύς) is also used to translate “might” in the New Testament, referring to “strength, power,” both inherent and in action.
God’s Might
The Sanctus: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. From Isaiah 6:3 and Matthew 21:9
God’s might is obvious: He made heaven and earth, all creation. He is powerful, mighty, God Almighty able to act. And His main actions are in relationship with humans.
Human Might
Humans are given “might” to perform tasks or fight battles. Listen to the Shema:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ESV
Spiritual Might
Now the connection between God’s might and humans—the spiritual strength to overcome fearful challenges. Might than comes from faith in Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:10-11 KJV
And so, I will be strong in the Lord and His power, and stand firm in my trust that He will provide all that we need. In His time. In the meantime, I will water my garden, for He has provided all that, too.
