Summer Solstice

Today in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun rises high in the sky then stands still according to the Latin derivation of solstice. But it is overcast here, so I revert to memory. I see my father presiding at the head of the table, gazing out the dining room window towards the West at sunset, teaching us the same lesson every year. “The sun is far north now, and tomorrow it will begin its slow move to the south.” Ta ta-dah… day is done…, we sing, teasing him a bit. Like my father, I love to observe natural change, the position of the sun in the sky according to the seasons and living things sprouting, blooming, harvesting fruit, lying dormant, the cycles of life. Happy Birthday, Alex!
